Three Ways to Install Crochet Braids

Not all crochet styles are created equally, literally. Looking at the finished product, you can’t tell the installation method used. Crochets can be installed in a base of cornrows, ponytails or a high bun. Whether you are installing yourself or going to a stylist, it’s best to use the method that is healthiest for your natural hair and lifestyle.

Let’s talk about three crochet installation methods.

Cornrows

The standard method of cornrows involves crochet styles with no leave out. Leave out refers to any amount of your natural hair that is not braided and used to blend with the crochet hair to create a more natural look. This braiding method is typically used for styles with lots of volume and when wearing braided or loc’d crochet styles. The size of the braids will depend on the density of the crochet hair and the style. If you’re on the go and do not have the time to manipulate your natural hair daily to blend with the crochet hair, cornrows may be a good option for you. 

Below is an example of a crochet style with no leave out, using the cornrow braid pattern:

Ponytails

As we know, crochet styles take less time to install than other protective styles. However, if you want to shorten the installation time….there are options. One option is to secure the natural hair into ponytails and then connect the ponytails. This method can cut installation time by a half hour or more depending on the size of the ponytails. Like cornrows, this method provides a sturdy base. For some, cornrows are stressful on natural hair. Securing hair in ponytails provides the same seamless final product without the stress of braids.

Crochet installation methods allow you to be versatile with styling! The ponytail method works well with half up/half down looks. These styles are usually worn a week or two, so saving time on the installation is key.

High Bun

Buns and bangs, anyone? Yes, please! This classic style never gets old and is perfect for any occasion. In about ten minutes, you can create a new look with crochet hair...and no braids. Simply secure your hair in a bun on top of your head. Use your favorite styling products to lay those edges. You can use curly crochet hair to cover your natural bun. To create the illusion of a bang, leave a section of hair out in the front and secure a hair band around the bun to separate the front piece. (For a visual, check out YouTube.) Have fun and make the bun as messy or as big as you’d like.

To keep’em guessing, you can change the bun each day. Try different colors, textures and curl patterns. Wear a side pony to add a twist. You don’t need to redo your base, just wrap with a satin scarf each night.
